BEAUTIFYING PAPATOETOE

VOLUNTARY WORKERS BUSY Imbued with the spirit of civic pride and to. enable the ratepayers’ money to be expended on more necessary W'orks in the district, a band of voluntary workers gathered at the junction oi! Station Road and Wyllie Road, Papatoetoe, on Saturday afternoon, and spent a profitable few hours in levelling off a triangle of land, which has for some time been an eyesore at the front door of the town. Several efforts have been made to have the area beautified out of revenue, but the Works Committee of the Papatoetoe Town Board has concentrated its activities in providing footpaths for the ratepayers, and the work of beautifying has been allowed to lapse.

Determined that an effort should be made to lift the stigma from this area, the Town Board decided to carry out the work by voluntary labour. An appeal was sent out to the Papatoetoe Chamber of Commerce and the Papatoetoe Welfare League, and their response was seen on Saturday afternoon, when the three organisations opened hostilities. The work was carried out under the direction of the board’s foreman, Mr. Neil Thompson, who directed operations, while Mr. A. W. Hall, M.P. for Hauraki, Mr. T. R. Smytheman, chairman of the Town Board, and Mr. H. C. Ernest, president of the Chamber of Commerce, vied with each other in the weilding of the pick and shovel. Mr. E. S. Sorensen, chairman of the Works Committee, and Mr. W. J. Nicholson, chairman of the Finance Committee, and Mr. W. Young, town clerk, were also active participants in the labour of love.

It is intended to continue the working bees until the triangle is levelled and fenced, and planted in lawn, when it is proposed to erect a light and have seats in the area.
