BITTERN SHOT

MISTAKEN FOR HAWK From Our Own Correspondent . WHANGAREI, Today. In the Police Court today before Mr. G. N. Morris, S.M., James Walters was charged with killing a bittern, a protected bird. Defendant pleaded guilty to shooting the bird, but had an explanation to make. The ranger said he saw defendant fire. He approached the spot and found him in possession of the bird. Accused said the bird landed in the rushes and he mistook it for a hawk. The ranger also thought it was a hawk. Counsel for the Acclimatisation Society said he was quite prepared to accept defendant’s explanation, as he could produce no evidence to the contrary. Defendant was convicted and ordered to pay costs 22s 6d.
