LAMB MARKET FIRMER
SMITHFIELD QUOTATIONS A decidedly firmer tone is recorded in the Smithfield market for lamb. Prices have shown a steady upward tendency over the past month. Higher prices are tending to check demand, but offsetting this is the fact that supplies of Southern Hemisphere lamb reaching the Home market at the moment must be slackening off considerably. The beef market is slow and lifeless; little business is doing in New Zealand porker or bacon pigs. The mutton market is reported •firm at recent quotations. Below is a summary of average prices realised at Smith - field last week, and supplied by the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. The quotations are based on actual transactions of wholesale quantities of the descriptions of meat mentioned, and are for representative parcels of the goods offering during the week, being for business done on the basis of delivered to Smithfield market and/ or ex London stores.
