COAL INDUSTRY

LABOUR COMMITTEE’S VIEWS SUPPORTING N.Z. MINES Press Association WESTPORT, Today. The Buller Labour Representation Committee at a meeting held at Westport on Saturday passed the following resolution, which was ordered to be sent to the Prime Minister and Minister of Mines: “That in view of the termination of the lock-out on the Northern coalfields of New South Wales, involving reductions in miners’ wages, and also in view of the subsidy of 3s 3d a ton to be paid to exporters of Australian coal to New Zealand, and the consequent possibility of the New Zealand market being flooded with Australian coal at dumping prices, the Government be urged to give effect to its promises to safeguard the coal industry of this country in this respect. This meeting further urges that since coal production is so essentially a New Zealand industry, a policy should be adopted of ensuring that all coal required for use here shall be produced from the coal mines of the Dominion.
