A motion approving of the proposed loan of £ 10,400 for the formation of a new traffic route through Garden Place, and the relief of unemployment, was passed at a well-attended meeting of the Hamilton East Citizens’ Association on Thursday evening.
A collision between a heavy lorry driven by Mr. G. H. Gilling, and a car driven by Mrs. A. E. Williams, occurred at the intersection of Bridge and Von Tempsky Streets about noon yesterday. The car was extensively damaged.
Support to a motion, “That Disarmament is the Best Means Toward Securing World Peace,” was accorded by members of the W.E.A. Debating Club on Thursday evening. Leaders for the affirmative were Messrs. E. Thomas and E. C. Banks, and for the negative, Mr. W. Jordan, jun., and Miss Ewan.
A committee, with power to act, was appointed at the executive meeting of the Waikato sub-provincial branch of the Farmers' Union yesterday to welcome the Auckland provincial farmers’ party on its Southern tour.
It was decided to ask the borough council to install community lighting in the business area of Grey Street at the meeting of the Hamilton East Citizens’ Association on Thursday evening.
Consternation has been expressed by several local public men at tiie suggestion that the new loan proposal for providing a traffic outlet may mean the destruction of Garden Place Hill. This little leafy nook is recognised cm an oasis in the desert of business premises in Victoria Street, and its disappearance would not be received with equanimity, according to the views expressed by those interviewed.
A successful season was reported at the annual meeting of the Hamilton Shakespeare Club on Thursday evening. Six new plays had been read, and “Journey’s End,” the famous war play, had been presented to the New Zealand public for the first time by the local club. Mr. E. Wilson was re-elected president, and Mr. H. F. Morton secretary. The first reading this season will be St. John Ervine’s play, “The First Mrs. Fraser.”
