GREAT CHARITY DRIVE
TRAVELLERS ORGANISE CAMPAIGN FOR 1930 MAY BE 2.000 HELPERS Probably 2.000 helpers. Four hundred cars, and more. Fifty motor-trucks, and more, too. This is organisation, the organisation planned by the Auckland Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association when it makes its drive for funds and clothing to relieve the poor. This morning, an enthusiastic meeting of organisers, officials and captains of the sections of Auckland to be covered during the drive on Saturday, June 2S. discussed the arrangements agreed upon. Next Saturday morning, the association will hold a meeting of all its members to advance the details of the scheme. Mr. W. IT. Prentis, who is chairman of the committee of organisers, recalled this morning the tremendous success of the association's drive for charity in 1928. In that effort, a triumph of organisation, money to the sum of £1.609 was raised to assist the poor, and clothing valued at £12,500 was collected. And this year, the association intends to improve on the organisation of 1925. Addressing the meeting, Mr. C. Bach, president of the association, mentioned the purposes of the campaign. Mr. Prentis gave figures concerning the organisation. In addition to all the helpers—from 1,000 to 1.500 were mentioned, but Mr. R. Glover-Clark, who is prominent in the organisation, later said 2,000 was the figure intended—tho cars, and the motor-trucks. 200 women helpers would be employed. While the district covered In 1928 had been principally from Inside Avondale to the other side of Kemutra, the area from New Lynn to Jlanurewa and all the boroughs of the North Shore would be concerned in this year’s campaign. DEPOT PROVIDED The Auckland Harbour Board had assisted by placing No. 11 wharf shed at the disposal of the association for use as a central depot. The assistance given by the Railway Department and tlie Northern Steamship Compar - in 1928 by allowing free carriage oC parcels would most likely be given on June 28. The issuing of notices of the campaign would begin in the churches tomorrow.
Mr. A. Thompson, who is to have charge of the central depot, informed the meeting that all the workers in the interests of charity had arrived at an arrangement which would ensure the providing of assistance to the actual people needing relief. Each applicant would be given a card and not more than one charity worker could be approached.
Mr. Glover-Clark, who has arranged the division of Auckland into sections in which captains will control the assistants, believed that 2,000 -workers could be occupied fully in Greater Auckland. The test of the organisation would be seen in the making of the drive within four hours. Each captain would have a detailed map of his section, and the sections could be subdivided for groups of workers. On the night before the drive, in order to pretent imposition on the public, speeial badges would be issued to the workers. Mr. W. M. Ingram, who will have charge of the arrangements for the North Shore and will assist in transport on the City side, also spoke. A letter from the Auckland Interhouse Girls Sports Association gave an assurance that assistance would be forthcoming. and, regarding business houses winch do not encourage collections on their premises, the exceptional circumstances of the drive are to be instanced. Helpers with cars are to report to the drive office in High Street.
