THE SUN POPUDARITY CAMPAIGN
ENTHUSIASM OVER PRIZE CAR PARADE YESTERDAY
Keen Interest Spreading to Country Areas
“Did you see the big parade yesterday?’* • Weren’t they beauties ?” “And to think The Sun is giving away these magnificent motor-cars absolutely free as a part of over £6,000 in prizes. * “Wouldn’t you like to win one of those cars?” These are remarks which are being heard on every side today after the big parade of the five prize motorcars which took place in the streets of Auckland yesterday. Thousands of people in Queen Street stopped to gaze with covetous eyes on those splendid rewards and the remark most frequent was “Somebody’s going to get them free. How can The Sun give away such wonderful prizes?” The parade started at The Sun office at 11 o’clock. Many of the contestants and friends were present and when the cars drove up a crowd assembled. Photographs were taken - —several contestants piled in with the drivers and the parade started. Back and forward along Queen Street and Karangabape Road the parade slowly wound.its way. Wherever there was a few minutes* stop a crowd collected almost to the point of a traffic jam. These beautiful prizes are displayed today in the window’s of the various General Motors dealers. The fact that they were going to be given absolutely free to the winners of The Sun’s competition is the thing that pleases everyone. The campaign is still open for nominations and in every list of contestants published many new names appear. There is excellent opportunity for any contestant to enter today and perhaps lead the entire list. One never knowg how many friends one has until they enter a competition of this kind. COUNTRY AREAS The keenest enthusiasm in this competition is spreading to the country areas. Contestants are entering from every part of the Auckland Province and most of the leaders of the entire list have been from the country towns. In so many cases the town has a certain element of town feeling for its home candidate and the people want to see not only the in-
dividual contestant win but their home town contestant win. There are some country towns where contestants have not yet started, but everywhere the keenest interest is being felt in the competition and the country people are realising that this opportunity is theirs just as much as for the people of Auckland City. COUPONS DISCONTINUED On account of the immense quantity of the 50-vote coupons being sent in from all over the Auckland Province it has been decided to discontinue the daily vote coupon starting from Monday next. For the balance of the campaign contestants will only receive votes from subscriptions which they or their friends turn in for three months or longer. The dally vote coupons count so little in comparison with the vast number of votes that subscriptions give. Most of the contestants will be pleased with the discontinuation of the coupons as their collection takes time and energy. This may be expended in getting subscriptions and thereby receiving many more votes than they could possibly get from the daily vote coupons. Contestants who are holding back amounts of these daily vote coupons are requested to send them in immediately so that they can be counted and published in the paper. A large staff of representatives of the Campaign Department has been working day and night compiling, checking, and crosschecking these little coupon votes. THE LIST A review of the list published today will show several important advances. One of the most phenomenal rises appearing in the list today is Mrs. T. Nicol, of Helensville. Mrs. Nicol entered the competition since the last count of votes. She called a few of her friends on the telephone, then called on them personally and in one afternoon she secured enough subscriptions to lead the entire list. The leader in Auckland is Father Holbrook, of Grey Lynn. Father Holbrook’s picture was published yesterday. This all goes to demonstrate the fact that the campaign is just getting under way.
am out to win, ana i know my friends are going to help me go over the top.” This is what pretty Miss Mimardiere said when she came to the Campaign Department to start in the race for one of the many big prizes offered. Miss Mimardiere is one of fhe very enthusiastic contestants in The Sun's great prize competition and she has scores of friends who are anxious to see her a winner. She has been tn Auckland for some years, formerly coming here from England. Miss Mimardiere said that she has always had a desire to go to Hollywood and to achieve that end she hopes to win one of the prize cars, which she will sell to help finance her theatrical education and trip to the Band of the Movies.
The people of Te Aroha are expressing much enthusiasm over the candidature of the Te Aroha contestant in The Sun’s great prize competition, Miss Lallie Magill. The Thames Valley A. P. and H. Association is running a queen carnival to raise funds for the rebuilding of their yards and Miss Magill has been elected the Town Queen. One of Miss Magill’s friends writes to the Campaign Manager as follows:- —-“I might say that Miss Magill is a very charming young lady who is extremely popular and well liked by the whole town of Te Aroha. Miss Magill’s mother is an invalid who is confined to her bed and to whom the daughter is most devoted. She has a pretty smile for everyone and gives one the impression that to her the world is full of sunshine. I can assure you that in allowing us to enter her in this competition she is showing the greatest enthusiasm, and combined with it is the added interest it gives to our carnival effort, and also the fact that this campaign is a new interest for her invalid mother, w-hich makes the task of working for Sun subscriptions and votes doubly pleasant.”
THE count as published below shows all votes polled up to noon on Tuesday. Votes polled after Tuesday will be in next count. AUCKLAND Votes. Father Holbrook.
