HOW TO MAKE CORKS FIT When corks become very dry they often allow the contents of a bottle to escape if stood up wrongly. To remedy this soak the cork for five minutes in salad oil, and it will be both air and water-tight. And a cork can be made to fit any bottle by being boiled for about five minutes.

QUAINT SCARVES

BLOUSES AND BOLEROS Long twisted scarves about the neck figured on nearly all the frocks at a recent collection in Paris. Tied in a bow at one side, the longer end hung almost to the hem. Many of the bodices showed extremely short bolero effects, while others merged into a little basque or peplum frill. Belts were narrow and usually of leather. Tucks showed an original arrangement. many of them taking a bias line across the bodice at the waist-line till they came perpendicular over the hips and thence fell into soft godets on the skirts. Jersey tweed suits were fashioned with short belted jackets, and shaped skirts and blouses of crepe de chine bordered with the tweed. Some of the bodices were inlaid into the skirt in pointed fashion with perhaps the tweed of the skirt reaching to a point in the neckline. Over many beige georgette models (the shirred skirt of these being usually of three fagoted horizontal bands with the hem band in a deeper shade) were worn short collarless belted double-breasted jackets of brown velveteen split up at the side fronts beneath the belt. These were accompanied by a made scarf collar of flat fur encircling the neck and fastening at one side with a deeppointed section in front to tuck under the belt. Blouses were a noted feature of the collection. For morning wear with English tweeds were shown Shantung crepe de chine, silk shirting, thin white linen and organdie. They varied from shirt-iike tailored cuts, such as The front U section with a tab at the bottom, trim little revers and collars, with or without yokes, and small breast pockets to jabot frills on soft • with much Pleating and hemstitching and satin, but on soft tailored lines. Printed chiffon blouses were shown with afternoon suits of taffeta, satin or marocam. Pink, clear to deep carnation, was a favourite colour, specially when carried on in satin with a black suit.
