WATER VIEW AND BUSES
Sir, — In reply to a letter in your issue of the 31st inst., on the subject of a feeder bus service to Waterview, Avondale, I would suggest that your correspondent, “Veritas,” stick more strictly to fact, and thus justify his penname. Firstly, the residents of Waterview were speaking for themselves, and not for the whole of the Avondale district. The 6,000 people to whom “Veritas” refers comprise Avondale, Waterview and Blockhouse Bay. These other districts will speak for themselves in the near future, as your correspondent will soon learn.
The sixty members present at the meeting last Tuesday were all residents of Waterview, despite the statement of “Veritas” that only 50 per cent, were Waterview ratepayers. His statement that most of the Avondale people were satisfied with the feeder service is absolutely incorrect as would be proved if a vote were taken on the question of a through bus service. Re. strap-hanging: May I mention that, with the present service, at peak hours, it is not an uncommon sight to see a great many passengers strap-hanging, whereas, under the feeder service, these people have to hang on the straps for a matter of probably one hour in tram and bus; with a through bus service, they would only be straphanging for 15 minutes at the outside. As to the statement that a through bus service would be to the detriment of property values, it is a notorious fact that property has slumped enormously since the Auckland Transport Board has taken over. In conclusion, I might mention that the Waterview residents will fight tooth and nail to have the through bus service restored GEO. W. CONNON, Hon. Secretary, Waterview Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association.
