REPAIRS TO BRIDGE
ACCESS TO KARAKA .From Our Own Correspondent PUKEKOHE, Wednesday. Repair work on the Hingaia bridge was commenced this morning. To spans on the centre of the bridge, which is on the Karaka-Papakura road, subsided to the etxent of six inches, and the decision was reached early last week to close the structure to traffic. Considerable difficulty has been experienced in obtaining machinerj’ suitable for the effecting of repairs; the question of materials has given cause for concern. As some of the timber could not be obtained in New Zealand, steps had to be taken to obtain it from Australia. It is expected fo arrive on Tuesday next. The county engineer, Mr. J. F. McArthur. stated today that everything possible was being done to expedite repair work as the settlers were depending on the bridge for a quick outlet. It was expected to have the work completed in about three weeks. Electric lights are being erected so that ‘°ng hours can be worked. Since the bridge has been closed jarricades have been removed and deliberately broken. When the machinery arrives the bridge will be completely blocked.
