MUSIC WEEK IN N.S.W.

BIG COMBINED EFFORT SCHOOLS TO HELP Preparations for Music Week in New South Wales point to a very fine combined effort. It has been decided to hold the first Music Week from Sunday, August 31, to Saturday, September 6—two weeks later than in New Zealand. Every clergyman in the State is to be asked to refer, during his sermons on the opening Sunday, to music and its spiritual value. The committee trusts, also, that every organist capable of doing so will arrange a special recital or musicale at his church that week.

A sub-committee is working on the matter of music in the schools, and the Minister of Education is to be asked to allow musicians to address and perform for the children during the week. It is hoped that arrangements will be possible for the singing by children and for performances by bands and orchestras in all public places. Music clubs are to be asked to use the publicity which the week will obtain for the formation of new clubs in suburbs and towns. At the meeting of the New South Wales committee there were present the president of the Musical Association of New South Wales, the Registrar of the Conservatorium, the president of the University Musical Society, secretary of Associated Music Clubs, representatives from the Australian Broadcasting Company, secretaries of the Society of Australian Composers and Authors, and the Music Advancement Guild, and several citizens prominnt in Sydney’s musical world.
