LEFT—BUT WINS
LUCKY LIGHT’S EFFORTS THIRD DAY AT DUNEDIN Special to THE SUN DUNEDIN, Wednesday. Bright winter weather again favoured the Dunedin Jockey Club for the concluding day of its winter meeting, but the attendance was only moderate, and tote speculation most disappointing, only £14,955 10s being handled as compared with £23,436 10s on the concluding day last year, making £60,927 for the meeting—a decrease of £19,563. The track was again in good order for winter going and the racing interesting, most of the winners having shown good form earlier at the meeting. Southland-owned and trained horses had a great innings, winning six of the eight races. After the Domain Handicap B. H. Brodie, rider of Jock O’Hazeldean, was suspended for a month for boring in and crossing Meitui near the finish. His offence appeared to be no worse than one or two other similar incidents during the meeting by other riders. Tahuna Steeplechase Parader was withdrawn from the Tahuna Hack Steeplechase and Red Heather (£130), French Fleet (£107), Kuku (£97) and Koremata (£96 A), were the best backed in a very poor betting pool. Red Heather led French Fleet and Rag Tag over the First two fences, then Koromata took charge and showed Red Heather, French Fleet, Wairio and Taramoa the way over the stand double. There was no change going to the back, excepting that Kuku fell at the post and rails on the side of *the hill. Red Heather fell at the first fence of the double near the six furlongs post, leaving French Fleet and Wairio well clear from Taramoa and Koremata. French Fleet unseated his rider on landing over the last fence, and Taramoa caught the feebly ridden Wairio in the last few strides and beat him by a head. Koremata was a dozen lengths away third and Kaikahu, who was very sore, a poor fourth The riding of Wairio at the finish was inquired into by the stipendiary steward, and Walker’s explanation that he was doing his best was accepted. Aldworth Handicap All started in the Aldworth Hack Handicap, and in close betting, Hounslow (£2795), Ravine (£238), Night Maid (£2oss), Salmo Salar (£204), Thurso (£l9Bs), were the best backed. Thurso and Fair Exchange led out of the straight, then Ravine went to the front and led Fair Exchange. Thurso. Impertinence and Dumblane. Before reaching the far turn Ravine and Fair Exchange were still in front. Leading Boy ran into third place here and Thurso and Night Maid were running next. Ravine led up the hill and into the straight from Leading Boy, Thurso, and Night Maid, Salmo Salar being one of the last. At the distance, Night Maid had displaced Ravine, and Thurso, on the rails, made a good challenge. Then Salmo Salar came
with a wonderful run and only failed by a head to catch Night" Maid. Ravine was a short length away third and Thurso, Dumblane, Miss Marco and Tembroney were next. King George Handicap Pink Note, who was lame, was withdrawn from the King George Handicap, and Black Duke (£338 10s) Full Feather (£286), Camisader (£180), Taboo (£172 10s), Apache (£165) and Red Sea (£147 10s), were the best backed. From a goud start Kin Tin Tin was first out, but after going a furlong gave way to Caterpillar, and this pair led along the back from Circulation, Apache and Black Duke, and the far turn was rounded in this order. Caterpillar led Rin Tin Tin, Apache and Taboo into the straight, Black Duke drifting back, while Full Feather and Black Mint were tailing the field. Apache took charge at the distance, where Taboo and Red Sea made good challenges, but Apache stayed on to win by three-quarters of a length from Taboo, with Kin Tin Tin only a neck away third. Red Sea, Glenrowan and Full Feather were next. Greenfield Hurdles Craigmore (£313), and Heather Lad (££o2 10s) were much better fanced than Paris (£l9B 10s), ur Troiius £lB6 10s) for the Greenfield Hurdles Handicap, Antrim Boy led Pangolin and Heather Lad over the first two hurdles, then the latter ran up into second place and with Antrim Boy drew out half a dozen lengths in front of Pangolin and Oriflamb. After rounding the far turn Oriliamb began to move up and at the second last fence Antrim Boy was less than a length in front of Heather Lad and Oriflamb, with the others beaten off. Antrim Boy led Oriflamb and Heather Lad into the straight, but the latter was almost on terms with him at the last hurdle, with Oriflamb close up. In the run to the post Heather Lad beat Oriflamb by half a length, while Antrim Boy was two lengths away third, and Troiius, who jumped badly, was a poor fourth. Craigmore slipped on landing over the second fence and unseated his rider. Empire Handicap Inevitable (£577 10s), Lucky Light (£425), Great Star (£293 10s), Full Fling (£2lB 10s) and Black Duke (£211) were the fancied brigade for the Empire Handicap. Lucky Light gave a lot of at the barrier and held the start up for fully ten rr ites. When they got away she and Great Star were left several lengths. Miss Redowa, Palermo and Full Fling began smartest, but after going a furlong Palermo was a couple of lengths clear of Miss Redowa and Full Fling, Lucky Light being last as they raced round the far turn. Palermo led First Raid, Miss Redowa and the favourite into the straight, where Lucky Light ran out wide. Palermo appeared to have the race in hand opposite the lawn stand, but then Lucky Light came with a good run and got up in time to beat Palermo by a neck. Black Duke was three-quarters of a length away third, and First Raid, Miss Redowa and Inevitable finished almost in line just behind the placed horses. Dunedin Steeplechase
Top Gear (£475 10s) was much better fancied than Radiate (£265) or Snowfall (£239 10s) for the Dunedin Steeplechase. Radiate led the favourite over the first fence, but positions were then reversed until the sod wall was reached, where Radiate again took command, Going into the back stretch Top Gear joined Radiate again •and jumping right away from him at 'the brush double led Radiate, Snowfall and Parader by a couple of lengths to the water jump, where Snowfall landed in second place. The latter headed Top Gear at the last fence and ran home a comfortable winner by three lengths from Radiate, who beat Top Gear in the last few strides. The latter pulled up lame. Parader was a fair fourth. Domain Handicap For the Domain Handicap Arrow - maid (£663) was much better fancied than Meitui (£492), Jock o’ Hazeldean (£485), or Tuku (£323 10s). Arrow Maid began best and was joined by Tuku before reaching the far turn, and the pair led Meitui and Jock o’ Hazeldean up the hill and into the straight, where Tuku retired. At the distance Jock o’ Hazeldean challenged Meitui and Arrow Maid, and appeared to cross o\ r er in front of Meitui just before reaching the post, and beat her by a length and a half. Arrow Maid was half a length off third, and Stringbow and Captivate were next. Ranelagh (£924) was sent out a slightly odds-on favourite for the Farewell Handicap, and Red Boa (£507), John Bradbury (£374), Smithereens (£289) and Royal Game (£2BB 10s) were the next fancied. From a good start Red Boa led out from Royal Game and Martis, and before reaching the far turn Sudden Storm ran up on the outside of Martis. Red Boa led up the hill from Sudden Storm, Martis and Royal Game, the latter being just in front of the favourite. Ranelagh improved his position on the home turn and followed Red Boa and Sudden Storm into the straight. At the distance Red Boa had to be shaken up, and responding well, beat the favourite home by a length and a-half. Sudden Storm was a short length away third, and Royal Game and John Bradbury next.
