PROTECTING INDUSTRY
SAFEGUARDING TARIFFS ESSENTIAL OTAGO FARMER’S VIEW From Our Own Correaporulent DUNEDIN, Today. “As far as our manufacturing industries are concerned, a measure of protection seems to be essential, even against Britain or any other part of the Empire,” said Mr. lan Revie, president of the Otago Farmers’ Union, in his presidential address to the annual meeting of the union yesterday. “With respect to these industries,’’ continued Mr. Revie, “I can only say that as farmers we can have no quarrel with them, so long as the protective duties are not allowed to become the cloak of inefficiency or stagnation. “Their benefits should accrue to all those engaged in the industries, including the w’orkers, and those who ask for them should be required to show their capacity to satisfy economically the needs of the local market. “We object to their being used merely as a means to extract more money from the consumer with less effort. It is this necessity for a certain degree of safeguarding that makes the absolute letter of the Empire free trade idea impossible.’’
