HOLIDAY SOCCER
FIRST REP. MATCH AUCKLAND DOWNS NAVY The Auckland Soccer representatives had their first trial of the season yesterday when they met the Royal Navy representatives in ths usual King’s Birthday match. Through smart use of scoring chances Auckland led by four goals at the interval, but there was no further score, Navy finding the Auckland defence too solid to penstrats. The trial match between Probables and Possibles saw a number of promising young players in action, the Probables proving too strong by five goals to one. There was a record crowd for the season present, and the senior service with its friends was largely represented, although the vocal urge was, perhaps, not quite so robust as on previous occasions. The absence of the Diomede has reduced the number of players Navy has to draw on, but several of the players yesterday are clever exponents of the code. They relied too much on individual effort and Auckland showed superior team work and cohesion. The ground was in excellent condition in spite of recent heavy rains, and the pace was fast throughout. A mirthful Interlude was the amusing demonstration of a bluejacket in a royal birthday mood of carrying out the naval maxim to “hang him on the wire!” SPENCER’S HAT TRICK At the start the smart naval men, in immaculate whites, made the pace very willing, but erratic target practice was responsible for the score sheet remaining blank until the machinery of the Auckland side got to work. Then a neat right flanking movement saw Innes put a perfect centre across for Spencer to connect and net the first goal. A few minutes later Kay on the opposite wing outpaced his naval pursuers and slammed a swift pass across the goal-mouth, where Forrester arrived hot-footed to slam past Redmond. The third goal came when a naval defender knocked the ball down under pressure, and Spencer made no mistake with the penalty kick. Navy was fighting hard to score, but the Auckland backs were very safe and solid. The fourth and final goal came just before half-time, when a pretty display of triangular work on the left between Jones, Hlslop and Kay ended with Kay hitting a hard one across on the run, and Spencer completed the movement in perfect style with a firsttimer to the net. AUCKLAND’S GOOD FORM The good form of the Auckland representatives so early in the season was very gratifying, and augurs well for the team maintaining its unbroken record in English Trophy games when challengers arrive shortly. All the local reps, were at their best and It would be difficult to displace one of them. Batty was as safe as ever in the local citadel, while Reid and Gerrard gave an inspiring display at fullback, their tackling, clearing and clever placing of the ball showing that there are no backs equal to the B pair in the senior A division, and with such perfect understanding between them the opposition will have to be very slippery to score. The halfline was sound in both defence and attack, and the forwards co-operated perfectly in some finished movements with Spencer as an ideal centrepiece as his “hat trick” proved. Redmond In the naval goal had a strenuous afternoon, and was not too sure with his clearances at times. Manplayed a staunch defensive game at fullback, and Luke at centre-half battled hard to stem the Auckland vanguard and open up the game for his own forwards. The Navy’s firing line was disappointing, both in combined work and in individual shooting capacity. They were harried severely by the Auckland middle line, and never found the fulbacks faulting, but on the occasions when they got Batty within range the marksmanship lacked both the sting and accuracy usually associated with the service shooting power.
