OUTSIDERS WIN
GOOD DIVIDENDS AT WINGATUI CATERPILLAR’S SUCCESS Special to THE SUN DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The Dunedin Jockey Club was lavoured with another bright, sunny day foi the middle day of its winter meeting, and there was a splendid attendance. The course was again in excellent order, and times were good for winter racing. The starting was not up to Mr. Mclvor's standard. but otherwise the sport was interesting. Several big dividends helped to keep down the totaiisator investments, which were £7,002 10s short of the holiday’s turnover last year. 13ven betting in the Forbury Steeples saw Kaikuhu (£340 10s), Double Soult (£334)) and French Fleet (£324 10s) carry the jnoney. Rag Tag and rrencn Fleet led Wairio over the first mile, the first change occurring when Kag Tag humped his rider off at the post and rails on the side of the hill. At the turn going into the back stretch Kaikahu slipped and fell and brought down Taramoa, also interfering with -Double Soult and Parader. This left Wairio and French Fleet with a lead of 15 lengths from Double Soult and Parader. After crossing the water jump Parader set out after the leaders. Wairio was just in front of French Fleet, with Parader two lengths off, at the home turn. Wairio easily held his advantage and won nicely by five lengths from French Fleet, who beat Parader by a length. Double Soult was 20 lengths fourth, the only other horse to finish. The winner returned a divided of nearly a-quarter of a century. Silverstream Handicap In the Silverstream Handicap Impertinence (£481), Palermo (£367) and Hounslow (£351 10s) were the best backed. From a good start Palermo, Hounslow and Remindful were the first to show out, and these three led Ravine round the far turn and half way up the hill, where Ravine and Impertinence moved up. Remindful led Hounslow into the straight from Ravine, Palermo and Impertinence. At the distance post Hounslow was in charge from Palermo and Ravine, but Impertinence got a good run on the rails, and drawing away in the last 50 yards, beat Palermo by two and a-half lengths. Ravine was half a lengths off third, and Hounslow, Jock o’ Uazeldean and Tembroney were next. Provincial Handicap All started in the Provincial Handicap, and Waterline (£997 10s), Black Duke (£B3O 10s), Camisader (£640) and Red Sea (£507) were the best backed. From one of the worst starts seen on the course, Camisader and Black Duke were badly left. Haze and Evening led Black Mint and Circulation out of the straight, and going into the back stretch Haze and Black Mint were racing together, just clear of Evening and Circulation, with Red Sea and the favourite next. Waterline moved up going round the far turn and half-way up the hill Haze and Black Mint were just clear of Evening. Waterline, Red Sea and Circulation. Evening, Haze and Black Mint were in line as they turned into the straight, with Red Sea and Waterline next. Waterline and Red Sea joined Evening and Haze at the distance post, then Pink Note made a challenge and in a splendid finish Waterline only beat Red Sea by a short half-length. Pink Note was a head away third, with Evening and Circulation almost in line. Wingatui and Black Duke were next. Otago Hurdtss All started in the Otago Hurdle Handicap, and Carinthia (£629) and Amorist (£597) were much better backed than Troilus (£442). Amorist led Gayoma and Craigmore over the first four hurdles, and after passing the stand Craigmore went up to Amorist. They raced together over the next three fences, Gayoma and Carinthia running next. With five furlongs to go, Amorist and Craigmore were 10 lengths in front of Gayoma, but at the far turn Craigmore retired beaten, and the favourite began to move up. The latter was within two lengths of Amorist at the second last hurdle, and led him into the straight. There were two lengths between them at the last hurdle, where Heather Lad and Troilus were next. In the run to the post Carinthia drew out to win by three lengths from Amorist. Heather Lad was four lengths farther back, Troilus, Antrim Boy and Craigmore being next. The time, 3.46, reduced the existing track record made nine years ago by Gamecock, by 3 3-ssec. Wairongoa Handicap All started In the Wairongoa Handicap, and the first day’s winner. Inevitable (£ 1,206 10s) and Great Star (£1,013), carried the heavy betting. Caterpillar and Great Star were the smartest to begin. Smithereens and Trlpaway being badly left. Caterpillar led Great Star, Full Fling and Rin Tin Tin round the far turn, the favourite improving his position. Caterpillar was still in charge at the home turn, and led Full Fling. Great Star, Inevitable and Lucky Light, who ran wide, at the turn Into the straight. Caterpillar maintained her advantage in the run down the straight, beating Lucky Light, who finished under the judge's box, by three-quarters of a length. Great Star was half a length farther back third, and Inevitable was close up fourth. Full Fling and Red Boa were next. Rin Tin Tin s breastplate broke during the race, and his saddle slipped back, interfering with his chance. The winner returned a dividend of nearly a score. Wingatui Staaplas The withdrawal of Top Gear from the Wingatui Steeplechase left a onedividend field. Radiate, who had A. K Ellis up, was sent out an odds-on chance carrying £1.005. with Night Raid £455 10s, and Kaikahu £336 10s, being the best backed of the others Kaikahu took charge from Snowfall and the favourite after the field settled down, and the only change In the first round was Mataipuke falling at the big sod-wall. The favourite jumped faultlessly in the first round, but was losing round on landing In the latter stages of the Journey. Snowfall went UP to Kaikahu five furlongs from home, the Southlander leading over th 6 last fence, and drawing out. won bv six lengths from Radiate who beat Kaikahu by a length. Night Raid war 20 lengths away fourth. Janefisld Handicap Close betting In the Janefleld Handicap slw Miss Redowa (£741) Semper ParatuT (£737 10s). Fair Exchange (£648) the favourites. Tuku. from the rails and Arrowmaid. •were the smartest’to begin, and they led along the back from Miss Redowa. At the far turn Arrowmaid, Captivate and Fair Exchange were showing the way to Miss* Redowa, Semper Paratus being wen back While this was the order TnVo the straight. At the distance post Semper Paratus commenced a good
run, and in an exciting finish beat Arrowmaid by a long neck. Miss Redowa was a head away third, and Captivate, Fair Exchange and Stringbow were next. Invermay Handicap In the Invermay Handicap Ranelagh (£1,158) and Full Feather (£1,076) were much better backed than Salmo Salar (£531 10s). Caterpillar at once shot to the front and led First Raid, Stealth and Taboo along the back. At the far turn Caterpillar was three lengths clear of Stealth, First Raid and Nedda, who were racing on even terms. As they raced up the hill Full Feather was tailing the field, and the favourite was running about eighth. Caterpillar led into the straight from First Raid, Stealth, Nedda, Taboo and Royal Game. She left the rails and led Salmo Salar through at the distance post. The latter got to the front and then the favourite challenged on the outside, but Salmo Salar stayed on well and beat Ranelagh by a length and a-half.
