AUCKLAND WINTER MEETING True Blood’s Fine Success BITTERLY cold-weather made conditions quite unpleasant at Ellerslie yesterday for the opening of the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting, and, although no rain fell, the bleak weather considerably affected the attendance, which was estimated at 26,000. However, the racing was excellent.
The course was soft and the times registered were slow. There were visitors present from all parts of the Dominion and Australia., an illuminating indication of the growing importance of the Great Northern fixture. The big event, the Great Northern Hurdles, was won by the novice lumper. King’s Jest, who gave a delightful display in winning this, his first hurdle race. R. Syme was given the ride a few minutes before the race, consequent upon E. Stanway being injured in the preceding event. Roman Abbey was second and Aurora Borealis an indifferent third. A lot of interest was lost in the contest when Mister Gamp came down over a fallen horse when putting in a good run two furlongs from home. Won Going Away True Blood scored impressively in the Cornwall Handicap. He was always handily placed and when he made his run he soon caught the leaders and over the last 50 yards he left them to it to fight out the minor placings. King Emerald was second and Seatown third. The latter should be improved by the race. The favourite, Standfast, was badly drawn and thereafter he was always in difficulties. He was fourth at the finish. Gold Money won the Members’ Handicap in great style, and she began brilliantly from an outside position. Nancy Lee and Prince Val chased the Paper Money filly home.
The Totaiisator Last year the winter meeting opened on a Saturday, the Monday being the King’s Birthday, with the Great Northern Steeplechase run on that day. Yesterday, Hurdles day. was the big holiday. The totaiisator put through £76,644 10s, compared with £69,103 on the first day 12 months ago, ar. increase of £7,541 10s. Excellent management was again ; the feature of the sport yesterday, the j secretary. Mr. W. S. Spence, being the j right man in the right place at the j head of the splendid organisation. Descriptions of the racing and full details of results are appended. Jervoi* Handicap—First Division Sir Mond, £2,443, was a hot order for the opening event, the first divi- ! sion of the Jervois Handicap, but he ! was well beaten into fourth place. Air j Laddie, £1,408, was a good second fancy, and Catoma, £385. and Chromadyne. £675, were at good prices. Catoma dwelt at the start, Chromadyne shooting out fast from Currajong, Sir Mond, Principal, Takuranga and Air Laddie. At the end of a couple of furlongs Chromadyne was bowling along in front, being followed by Catulus, Principal, Sir Mond, Catoma, Currajong, Air Laddie, Goldlike Lay Lass and Brampton, with Red Day tailing the field. Catulus took charge passing the five furlongs, and at the half he was slightly in front of Air Laddie, Goldlike and Chromadye, with Day Lass, Sir Mond, Catoma, Red Day and Brampton next. Air Laddie and Chromadyne were on terms at the straight entrance, with Goldlike, Sir Mond, Catulus, Catoma and Day Lass following At the distance there was little between Chromadyne, Air Laddie, Principal and Sir Mond, and this was the order in which they finished, Chromadyne beating Air Laddie by half a length, with Principal two lengths farther back, just in front of Sir Mond. Then came Currajong, Catoma, Roman Pearl, Brampton, Red Day, Goldlike, Day Lass and Patutahl. Green Lane Steeplechase Four scratchings reduced the field in the hack steeplechase to seven runners, Master Lu displaying too much pace for his opponents. There was most support forthcoming for Master Lu, £ 1,364, Potoanui, £1,262, and Rahepoto, £1,150, with Lucess, £654, at a fair price. St. Warrigal led over the first fence from Marita, Master Lu and Lucilia, and Rahepoto fell at the second obstacle. Over the double on the fiat, St. Warrigal was half a dozen lengths ahead of Marita, with Master Lu the same distance back, and Pofoanui, Lucess and Lucilia at intervals. St. Warrigal, Marita and Master Lu ■were together down the back, and St. Warrigal was in front again going up the hill the second time, with Master Lu handy, and Marita and Lucess followed, the last-named going strongly. Master Lu was first over the second to last fence from St. Warrigal, Marita and Lucess, and the first named went on to win by five lengths from Lucer-s, who defeated St. Warrigal by two and a-half lengths for second money. Marita, Lucilia and Potoanui were at intervals. Jervois Handicap—Second Division Hannibal and Royal Visitor were best backed of the 16 runners in the second division of the Jervois Handicap, but Valreina and Snow Prince also had many friends. Snow Prince jumped out quickest from Valreina, Neil, Spring Abbey and Gay Cockade, but at the seven furlongs Valreina was in front, followed closely by Gay Cockade, Snow Prince, Perfecto, Valcuir, Royal Visitor, The Sun and Hannibal. Passing the three-furlong post Gay Cockade was level with Valreina and the pair led round the turn hotly pursued by Royal Visitor, Snow Prince, Valcuir, Hannibal. Unoco and Spring Abbey. Inside the distance Hannibal made a determined effort and in a stirring finish gained a head decision over Gay Cockade, with Valreina a similar distance away third and Royal Visitor close up fourth. Then came Valcuir, Micrometer, Spring Abbey, Trishna, Neil, Unoco, The Sun, Grattus and Snow Prince. Penrose Hurdles Taumai £2,290 and Sir Archie £1,936 were the main fancies for the Penrose Hurdles and, while the favourite won with ridiculous ease. Sir Archie came a bad crash at the hurdle near the six furlongs, when he was hopelessly out of the race. Horse and rider received severe injuries, and E. Stanway, who was engaged to ride King’s Jest in the Northern Hurdle race, was substituted by R. Syme. Marble Mount was the early leader, but Taumai soon went up to him and the pair led past the stands 12 lengths clear of Kairuri, St, Ames, Quincoma, Kongo, Sir Archie and Harbour View. At the six furlongs Taumai was eight lengths in front of Marble Mount, with six lengths back to Kairuri and Quincoma. Here Sir Archie, who was trailing the field, fell. The hurdle at the three furlongs saw the downfall of Quincoma (who was making a forward move) and St. Ames. Taumai was twenty lengths in front of Kairuri and Harbour View at the home turn and the favourite won as he liked by fifteen lengths. Kairuri was second, three lengths In advance of Harbour View, with Kongo and Marble Mount next to arrive. Great Northern Hurdles E. Stanway’s misfortune gave R. Syme a stroke of good luck when the latter received the mount on King’s Jest for the Great Northern Hurdles, the Hawke's Bay candidate scoring from the favourite, Roman Abbey, who carried £3,240. Mister Gamp £2,289 and Aurora Borealis £2,123 were also in good demand, while King's Jest was entrusted with £1,410. When the field settled down Daylight was in front from Wako King, Kamehameha, Elysianor. Roman Abbey, Aurora Borealis. Mister Gamp and King’s Jest. Maunga tailing off. There was not much pace on and Wako King piloted the field down the back, his nearest attendants being Roman Abbey. Daylight ;.nd Kamehameha. When the stand was reached Roman Abbey went to the lead and made play from Wako King. Mister Gamp, Aurora Borealis. Kamehameha, King’s Jest and Elysianor. At this stage Elysianor fell and Maunga was pulled up. The favourite led along the back again from Wako King, King’s Jest, Aurora Borealis, Mister Gamp and Kamehameha (who was pulled up). Two fences from home Wako King fell and brought down Mister Gamp, who was going well. Roman Abbey and King’s Jest turned for home together, well clear of Aurora Borealis, but the latter finished best to win bythree lengths. Twenty lengths back came Aurora Borealis, followed 100 yards away by Daylight. Cornwall Handicap Standfast £2,280 was a. warm fav-
The popular Cambridge sportsman. Mr. R. Hannon, won two races, with Chromadyne and Pennyplain. Hannibal socred a. good win in the second division of the Jervois Handicap and Taumai made no race of the Penrose Hurdles. Master Lu gave a good exhibition in the Green Lane Steeplechase and he is a promising recruit to the ranks of cross-country performers.
ourite, with Paha £ 1.177 next in demand. 3ac-cers, however, were well astray, the dividend payers being True Biood £541 and Kin g Erne raid £ 354, the former paying a good double-figure j price. Xas sock was the first to show ' out, leading out of the straight from ■ Mon Star, Kawainga, Corinax. Standfast, Barometer and True Blood, the last half dozen here being Kara, Pom- • peius, Valsier, Maori Boy, Transformer 1 and Bold Front. Along the back Nassock still had a slight advantage over , Kawainga. Barometer. True Blood, who were followed closely by Corinax. Mon Star, King Emerald. Seatown, Stand- , fast, Pahu. High Pitch, Lucy Rose, t Valsier and Maori Boy. Approaching the entrance to the straight Kawainga headed Xassock. this pair being the ' first to turn for home, followed by Barometer, King Emerald, True Biood. Standfast, Prince of Orange and Seatown. Inside the distance the favourite made an effort but True Blood, finishing strongly, beat King Emerald j by one and a-half lengths, with Sea- s town a length away third, and Lucy Rose, both on the outer, close up fourth. j Then came Standfast. Pompeius. Barometer, Corinax, Valsier, Xassock, High ’ Pitch, Maori Boy and Prince of Orange, j Hunt Club Hurdles Pukerimu £2,077, Pennyplain £1,340 I and the Odin —Frey j a bracket £1,633. were the chief selections in the Hunt : Club Hurdles. Temperature and i Twinkler were the early leaders, but ! Copey soon shot to the front followed j by Spalpiko, Sea ram ouch e (who fell at the second fence) and Pukerimu. At the stands the order was Temperature, Copey, Twinkler, Pukerimu, Odin, Pennyplain and Freyja and they raced along the back in this order. Crossing j the top Temperature and Copey were I five lengths clear of Odin and Penny- j plain (Freyja fell here), but as the ; straight was reached Mashoor moved 1 up to Temperature, followed by Penny- 1 plain. In the run home the latter did j best, to win by three lengths from i Mashoor. with Odin ten lengths back j third. Then came Copey and Puke- ; rimu (who broke down in the run j home). Members’ Handicap Gold Money £2.133, was the elect of I the field over Leitrim £1,711 and j Havering £1,051. Prince Val led out { from Havering, Honiton and Derry Belle, but when the five furlong post was reached Leitrim held command from Gold Money, Honiton, Prince Val and Havering. Honiton, Leitrim and the favourite were the first round the final bend, with British King, Nancy Lee and Prince Val also in the picture. Over the concluding stage Gold Money finished well to stall off Xancy Lee's I challenge by a length, with Prince Val three parts of a length away third, and Havering fourth. Then came Flying Prince, Taku Tama, Eager Rose and Honiton, Imperial Prince, Sea Cob and British King. ADDITIONAL RESULTS PENROSE HURDLE RACE HANDICAP Of £ 400; IJ,miles 1— TAUMAI (P. A.
