TUAKAU BRIDGE
“NOT ONLY EXAMPLE OF BOWSTRING GIRDER” OTHERS IN N.Z? Though the reconstruction of the Tuakau Bridge in reinforced concrete on the bowstring girder principle is claimed to afford the only example of this work in New Zealand there are already two bridges of the kind, according to Mr. D. Gordon Jack, a bridge engineer. lITR. JACK says the roadway bridge over the Opawa River at Blenheim is of the bowstring girder type. It was built in 1915 by the Public Works Department and consists of five spans of reinforced concrete. The West Shore Bridge at Napier, which is used for railway and road traffic, was erected in 1918 by the Public Works Department on the bowstring girder design. The structure has a centre span of 50ft. The bridge at Tuakau is being built by the Raglan County Council to replace the old wooden one which started to collapse last year. The estimated cost of the new bridge is £24,000 and the plans have been submitted to the Public Works Department for approval. There are six spans of 110 ft and one beam span of 35ft.
