PEOPLE TO CONTROL
AUSTRALIA WARNED AGAINST RESERVE BANK BILL QUESTION OF SOUND FINANCE CANBERRA, Tuesday. Mr. J. G. Latham, Leader of the Opposition, speaking in the Federal House of Representatives on the Central Reserve Bank Bill, said the Government obviously sought to control currency and credit in order to achieve political and social objects, and ultimately to place the control of banking in the hands of the people. This opinion was strengthened by the decisions reached at the recent Federal Labour Conference, which asked the Government to establish credit, and to provide £20,000,000 for the unemployed and relief works. There was not the slightest doubt that the Government Intended to depart from the canons of sound finance. He hoped the Senate would reject the Bill.
