NEW GERMAN OATH
HINDENBURG’S SUBTLETY BINDS PATRIOTS ALLEGIANCE TO REPUBLIC LONDON, Tuesday. The Berlin correspondent of the “Daily News” says the most important step yet taken to assure the permanence of the German Republic was taken by President Hindenburg when, almost unnoticed by the public, he decreed a new formulation of the "articles of war” through which the entire army took the oath of loyalty to the Republic. This is the first time since the revolution of 1918 that the German Army has officially recognised the Republic, which the previous articles of war did not mention. Formerly a soldier was merely required to swear allegiance to the Fatherland. The Monarchists will no longer be able to claim that they can advocate the abolition of the Republic and still remain loyal to the Fatherland.
