TWO CUMBERS HURT
FALL OF 400 FEET OVER ROCKS ONE SLIDES 300 FEET From Our Own Correspondent STRATFORD, Today. Two miraculous escapes from death occurred on Mount Egmont yesterday. When a party was descending Fantham’s peak, a man, whose boots w.ere not properly fitted with nails, slipped and began to slide down the ice. Gordon Irving, a bank clerk, of Stratford, went to the rescue and stopped him. but lost his own footing and slid over the rocks and ice for 400 feet. He was assisted to the mountain house and later taken to the Stratford Hospital, where he is progressing satisfactorily. The other accident occurred on Curtis Ridge, when W. Carman lost his footing and slid into the Kapuni Gorge to a depth of 300 feet. He was badly cut and bruised, but although he rolled like a ninepin into the gorge, no bones were broken. The ice was pierced in many places by jagged rocks and Carman’s escape was really marvellous. He was rescued from a perilous position by ropes and was carried over slippery slopes to the Dawson Falls Hostel, the journey taking four and ahalf hours. Doctor Doris Gordon was called to the Stratford Mountain House by mistake and had to make a difficult journey on foot from there to Dawson Falls to attend the injured man, who was later removed to hospital. His condition is satisfactory. It was later reported from hospital that Carman had a broken collarbone and two broken ribs.
