UMPIRES UNPOPULAR IN MATCH IN FRANCE COCHET DEFEATS T3LDEN PARIS, Monday, In the final of the men’s lawn tennis championship, Cochet defeated Tilden, 3—6, 8-—6, 6- —3, 6 —l, winning the title for the fourth time. The match was sensational. It was witnessed by 12,000 spectators. Tilden opened brilliantly and won the first set. They had reached six all in the second set when a doubtful base-line shot was adjudicated in Tilden’s favour. The spectators ‘‘booed,” shouted and whistled. They renewed a disgraceful disturbance when the baseline umpires changed another decision after Tilden had challenged the point in the. next game. Tilden wished to abandon the match but finally played on, Cochet winning easily. DAVIS CUP MATCHES AMSTERDAM, Monday. In the Davis Cup contest Holland v. Czecho-Slovakia, at Scheveningen. the latter won the rubber and will meet Japan in the next round. In the final singles Timmer (Holland) beat Menzel (Czechoslovakia), S—6, 6—o, 4—6, 7—5, and Kozeluh (Czecho-Slovakia) heat Diemerkool (Holland), 6 —4, 4—6, 6 —3, 6—3.
