The airplanes are the first instalment of a fleet destined for the British ! Dominions and in a few months the j whole of the firm’s business throughout the Empire will be linked up in this way. All the salesmen to be engaged on i the routes are ex-Serviee pilots and young men. They have undergone a special business training. Sir Sefton Brancker, Director of Civil Aviation in England, stated that the organisation had the Air Ministry’s support in the new enterprise. A director of the Shell organisation said: —“For the British colonies we are using British airplanes, De Havilland and Avro Avians. These machines are all-metal, fitted with metal propellers and Handley-Page slots. The pilots are provided with parachutes of Government pattern.” ; A Gipsy Moth purchased by the sales manager of the Shell Company of Australia, Limited, Sydney, is shortly due in Melbourne. This airplane will be painted Shell colours, red and gold, and named “Golden Shell,” and will be for the use of the conipany’s officers in the interest af aviation generally. This move on the part of the company is but a further proof of the intense interest which has always been taken in aviation in the very earliest pioneer flights up to the present time. NEW LONG LIFE TYRE As the final step in introducing a com- . pletely new line of tyres the Canada Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd., has announced the Royal Master, a new tyre in the so-called super quality field. This latest product of the manufacturers of Royal Tyres, is designed to meet the need for a tyre that V4l last for practically the lifetime of t&tcar. Rubber has been massed where wear is heaviest, and in the building of the carcase, and in tread design, the aim of the designing engineers was to construct a tyre capable of unusually high mileage. UNIVERSAL JOINT TROUBLE Lack of oil is not the only cause of trouble that may occur in the universal joint. In a case reported by a garage manager recently a car would not run more than a few hundred miles. The universal joint was found to have been ground out, and a new one was installed. But after another 300 miles had been run the car again ceased to run. It was then recollected by the owner that he had some time previously run his car into a tree and this accident, it was discovered, had thrown the rear axle out of truth, with the result that undue strain was thrown on the universal joint and its bearing.
