SEEKING ADVENTURE
TOURING THE WORLD IN A “BABY” CAR AUCKLANDERS’ UNDERTAKING In tho grip of the wanderlust, and seeking more adventure, Mr. llector MacQuarrie, of Auckland, accompanied by his colleague, Mr. R. B. Matthews, who together made a noted tour from Sydney to Cape York in a “baby” ear, arrived by the Maunganui this morning in continuation of a motor trip of tho world. Well-known as a journalist and author, Mr. MacQuarrie has contributed to The Sun and various American newspapers and journals, while the noted Sydney-Cape York jaunt provided material for his latest literary work. The email car, bearing: the marks of many thousands of miles of rough travelling, _ was landed from the Maunganui this morning:, and will he used in the New Zealand tour, which
is to extend from Spirits’ Bay in the far North to the Bluff. The touring motorists expect to remain in the Dominion for about three weeks and v. ill then proceed to Fiji, which is to be the next stepping stone in their novel and adventurous undertaking. Interviewed on board the steamer this morning, Mr. MacQuarrie was rather modest in relating the part he had played in the venture. “He is the man who is responsible for us getting through. He does the driving: I do any pushing which is necessary,” said Mr. MacQuarrie. smilingly, as he pointed toward his friend. Both men had a story of adventure to tell concerning their Australian trip. From Sydney to Cairns, north of Brisbane, travelling conditions could not be claimed as hazardous. but from Cairns northward, inland and over narrow tracks where no car had pre viously travelled, conditions were very rough. It took more than three weeks to make the journey from Cairns. From Cape Y’crk they shipped to New Guinea, where they ventured up the Fly River bv launch. Mr. MacQuarrie intends writing a book on his travels in New Zealand.
