AMATEUR ATHLETICS
GOOD FIELDS ENTER CLOSE FINISHES Good fields contested all events at the meeting of the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club on the Domain on Saturday. Winning form in each contest was of a high standard. J. W. Turnbull won the first heat and the final of the 75 yards handicap at a fast pace off 11 yards. The going was soft and bumpy. H. S. Roper won his heat, and ran second in the final. R. C. Willey ran very fast for second place in his heat, with A. J. Elliott a few inches behind him.
The steeplechase produced a good field of 20 runners. The handicapping was well done, and a great finish resulted The course was two and ahalf times round the usual circuit. A. B. Browne ran hard off 10 secs, to win from N. F. Cooper, who has not been able to train hard this season, but exerted himself to the limit on Saturday. Browne also ran to fastest time, in 8 minutes. S. Thomas was unlucky in falling at the last hurdle, as lie might otherwise have had a better place. J. W. Savidan finished fifth, but did not exert himself. J. Lynch and C. T. Mitchell made some good efforts in the shot-putting event. Lynch also won the discus - throw. He is in good form for his first essays this season.
