ARAB SEAMAN KNIFED
COMPATRIOT REMANDED ON ASSAULT CHARGE WOUNDS NOT SERIOUS Alleged to have inflicted three severe knife wounds on the head of a compatriot in an affray at Chelsea yesterday afternoon, Yahia Ahmid, an Arab seaman, aged 28, was remanded for a week, at the Police Court this morning. Ahmid appeared on a charge of assault, causing actual bodily harm. The injured man is Said Allowen, who is a fireman on the steamer livington Court, which berthed at Chelsea yesterday morning with a cargo of raw sugar from Cuba. Allowen is said to have left the llvington Court about 4 p.m., returning running a few minutes later. He was bleeding profusely and collapsed on the deck. He had a wound two inches deep on the back of the neck, another an inch deep near the left ear, penetrating the jaw, and a third above the eye. The wounds are believed to have been caused by a pocket-knife. After the wounds were treated by Dr. J. W. Craven, of Birkenhead, the man was taken to the Auckland Hospital in a St. John ambulance. The police were communicated with and Ahmid was arrested at 9 p.m. by Detective-Sergeant McHugh, Constable Watts and Constable Snow, of Birkenhead. Mr. McHugh found evidence of a struggle on a footbridge leading from the wharf to the sugar works. Chief-Detective Hammond informed Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., this morning that the wounds were.not serious. An assurance had been given that the vessel would not sail before June 9.
