BOBBY JONES WINS

FINAL AT ST. ANDREW’S GREAT PLAY OF WINNER LONDON, Saturday. in the final of the amateur golf championship at Si. Andrews today Bobby Jones (America) beat R. H. Wetliered (England) by 7 up and 6 to play, and so for the first time won the amateur title. Jones’s victory came after he had played nine matches in six days, which have entailed a loss of a stone in weight. Wetliered. after maintaining for nine holes his reputation for playing his best golf at St. Andrews, encountered disaster, and lost four successive holes. He and his opponent were each out in 35, and turned all square, but Jones was 4 up at - the end of the first round. Alter that Wetliered continually blundered, and did not always recover. Jones played as if inspired, with his unhurried, machine-like perfection. TWENTY THOUSAND PRESENT When the afternoon round was started the players appointed bodyguards to ensure elbow-room. Francis Oiumet and G. von Elm, the American players, protected Jones, while C. J. Tolley helped to safeguard Wethered. Nevertheless the clearing from the fairway of intruders necessitated several delays.

The American was 6 up at the tenth hole in the last round. The eleventh was halved in threes. The twelfth was the last hole of a memorable match. Wethered’s ball was on the green for two, and ran a yard and ahalf past the flag. He missed his putt, and Jones, who lay dead, won the hole, the match, and the championship. Trains had brought hundreds of Scotsmen to swell the noisy crowd to 20,000 persons, including some with bagpipes. None of the spectators was hit, in spite of the stampedes from green to green. A diminutive woman spectator, when stymied by the crowd, overcame the handicap with a periscope.
