TAKAPUNA’S BAND

NEW PRACTICE ROOM OPENED VOLUNTARY WORK Although actually in use for some weeks past, the new bandroom of the Takapuna Municipal Band was not officially opened until Saturday afternoon last. The building is situated on Taharoto Park and was erected by voluntary labour supplied by band members and supporters. The structure, which is 24ft. by 28ft, is so planned that it can be enlarged. Besides giving accommodation for the band, it will serve as a social centre for West Takapuna. In declaring the bandroom open, the Mayor of Takapuna, Mr. J. W. Williamson, gave a resume of the history of the band since its establishment in 1923. He paid a tribute to the civic spirit of those citizens who had given their*time and skill to the erection of the bandroom. Mr. G. F. McFlinn, deputy-chairman of the band committee, thanked the members of the Takapuna Borough Council for their interest and financial support of a project that had long exercised the minds of the band committee, and had at last been accomplished. He made special mention of the work of Mr. A. H. Wilkie in regard to the financing of the scheme. Other speakers included Crs. B. C. Hart and J. Collins, members„of the Takapuna Borough Council, and Mr. M. L. Wilkins.

Afternoon tea was provided by an energetic women's committee working under the direction of Mrs. J. C. Blomfield.

Under the baton of Mr. 11. F. Hildreth, a massed band performance was given by bandsmen from the Takapuna Municipal, Devonport United and Birkenhead Municipal Bands. The Takapuna Junior Band, which was formed to provide recruits for the borough band, made its first public appearance. It consists of 26 boys, ranging in age from six to about 14 years. One 11- > ear-old boy travels from Dominion -tvoad to Takapuna every Tuesday e\ emng to practise. The munieipalitv has provided funds for the purchase of 16 instruments and the rest of the boys have been equipped with cornets and horns formerly used by other bands.
