POLICEMEN BY HEREDITY
THREE GENERATIONS SERVE A record, believed to be unsurpassed in the annals of the London. Metropolitan Police Force, is brought to light by the retirement, after 25 years* service, of Constable Herbert Ward. Constable Ward's grandfather joined the force in 1543, and after serving for 17 years and six months, was compelled to retire owing to serious injuries received while on duty at Isleworth. He lived to the age of 92, and died in 1909. His son. ex-Ser-geant \V. Ward, who lives at Hammersmith. and who is 79, joined the force in IS7O. He retired in 1595 as chief warrant-officer sergeant, being at the time attached to Clerkenwell Police Court. His eldes-t son joined the D Division in 1599, but died after serving 135 years. Constable Herbert Ward, who has just retired, joined in March, 1905. He served 25 years in the Hampstead division, and during the whole of this period was only unfit for service owing to sickness on 25 days, or one day a year. He retires in the bes-t of health.
