Dunedin Meeting Opens Tomorrow

CARD OF EIGHT EVENTS PROSPECTS DISCUSSED (By “EARLY BIRD”) The winter fixture of the Dunedin Jockey Club is to be held tomorrow, and on the following Tuesday and Thursday. The going promises to be considerably better than is usually associated with the Wingatui course in midwinter, so with good fields engaged the racing should be highly entertaining. The big jumping event is the Otago Steeplechase, but this has attracted only seven acceptors. Perhaps Radiate and Snowfall will be found fighting out the issue. There is a much better field

in the June Hurdles, which will be a preliminary to the Otago Hurdles o.n Tuesday. Eight remain in the principal flat race, the Birthday Handicap, and perhaps the distance, a mile and a-half, has something to do yith the poorness of the field numerically. Arikiwai appears to stand out, with the three-year-old Waterline and Pink Note also likely to be in the firing line. Fourteen are liable to contest the sprint, the Tradesmen’s Handicap, including the Invercargill winners, Rin Tin Tin and Black Duke, and this pair, together with Caterpillar, may run best. The hack events have filled best of all, but that is not surprising . The following will be well supported in their engagements tomorrow: Hunters’ Steeplechase FRENCH FLEET RED HEATHER Brighton Handicap RAVINE STARSHOOTER Birthday Handicap ARIKIWAI WATERLINE Otago Steeplechase SNOWFALL RADIATE Tradesmen’s Handicap RIN TIN TIN CATERPILLAR June Hurdles PANGOLIN ORIFLAMB St. Clair Handicap PALERMO CROSSBOW Winter Handicap GLENROWAN ROYAL MINT
