Obituary

MR. W. C. CHATFIELD

The death has occurred in Wellington of Mr. W. C. Chatfield. aged 79, formerly one of Wellington's leading architects. He arrived in the early ’sixties, and was a founder and first president of the New Zealand Institute of Architects.—P.A.

MR. JAMES FERGUSON Mr. .'ames Ferguson, who died at i his residence, Matamata, on Saturday, | was born in Newburgh, Fifeshire, 76 ! years ago. He served his apprentice- ; ship as a marine engineer, and one of his .first undertakings was the work ; of erecting the railings surrounding ; the Robert Burns Memorial in GlasJTe worked for a considerable time j in the shops of Benny Bros., engineers ! and shipbuilders, Dumbarton. Later ■he was associated with the Union i Steam Ship Company, serving with it ; for a number of years. His first ship j was the S.S. Hero, and he was chief | engineer on the S.S. Rotomahana, at cne time the greyhound of the comi pany’s fleet, and other vessels. He j also held the position of superintendent engineer for some time with the company in Wellington. On retiring from the Union Co. he took up business • with A. J. Parker and Company, the I family at that time removing from Dunedin to Auckland. Buring the . past seven years the family has resided at Matamata. The body was cremated at Waiku- . mete, members of the Institute of Marine and Power Engineers acting Fis pall-bearers. Air.
