RECEPTION TO LADY BLEDISLOE AT HAMILTON
COMBINED WOMEN'S ORGANISATIONS On Tuesday evening, her Excellency. Lady Bledisloe, was welcomed to New Zealand by the combined women's organisations in Hamilton. The reception room of the V.W.C.A. had . been made delightfully attractive. Flags draped the windows, and masses of pampas, bamboo, hydrangeas and chrysanthemums frescoed the walls, while one end of the hall was arranged as a drawing room. ! Fow and Mrs. Waddell, was ; received by Dr. de la Mare, and prei sented with a posy of blossoms in deep j pinks and red. Those toned in with 1 Lady Bledisloe’s gown of phlox pink sequined tulle over petunia, an evening coat of white fur completed her charming toilette. A guard of honour was formed by | the Hamilton Girl Guiders, under Mrs. j H. Toombs and Miss E. Scliever. j A simple but eloquent speech of wel- | come was read by Dr. de la Mare. In acknowledging it, her Excellency congratulated the women of Mew Zealand on their public spirit and their enthusiasm in furthering the cause of women. She proved herself conversant with much that they had achieved, and was received with much applause. Later an enjoyable musical programme was provided, when several pianoforte solos were played delightfully by Miss Xorah Valder, and songs were given by Mrs. Farquhar. Mrs. Seeles and Mrs. lan Steward, the accompanists being Mrs. Hubert Hammond and Miss X. Valder. KENNETH GORDON IS SPEAKER LITERARY BRANCH MEETS i On Tuesday evening - the literary i branch of the Victoria League held the second of the series of lectures in the league rooms, Shortlancl Street. There was a large and appreciative audience present. Airs. Kenneth Gordon, president of the Dickens Fellowship, gave an eloquent lecture on “The Charm of Dickens,” and stressed his human appeal to mankind in general. Illustrative readings from various works were given by Dickens Fellowship members: Aliss Statham, Xicholas Xickleby; Air. Kidson. Great Expectations; Air. Clarkson. David Copperfield; Airs. Gordon, Christmas Stories. Air. Townley Little acted as chairman. DEATH OF MRS. WALKER LOSS TO WOMEN’S COUNCIL News has come to hand of the death of Airs. H. J. AValker, president of the Gisborne branch of the Xational Council of Women, who passed away suddenly in Wellington on Alay 12. The late Airs. Walker will be remembered by those who attended the N.C.W. Conference at Gisborne last year, as her kindliness and genial nature attracted them all. The late Airs. Walker is a sister of Airs. Henry Smith, of Wellington, formerly president of the Wellington branch.
