NOTED MARINER DEAD
FORMER COMMANDER OF MAJESTIC ADVENTUROUS CAREER Reed. Noon. LONDON, Wednesday. The death has occurred of Commodore William Marshall, aged 57, former commander of the liner Majestic. Commodore William Marshall. C.B L-D" R.N.R., was Commander of the White Star liner Majestic until he retired in 1928. He was born at Bolton and w-as educated in Bolton and later in H.M. School Ship Conway at Liverpool. In 1891 be joined the White Star Line as an apprentice, receiving his first command of one of the company’s liners in 1911. He commanded the S.S. Afric. which w-as a transport in the convoy accompanied by H.M.A.S. Sydney when the German cruiser Emden was destroyed. He was appointed a Commodore in the R.N.R. in 1927 and w-as Royal Naval Reserve A.D.C. to the King in 1926-1928.
