PENALTIES AGAINST BUS PROPRIETORS UNLICENSED SERVICES Oitnibus proprietors who had rut services to the Avondale and Ellers lie races during the Easter holiday! though not licensed to do so, were charged at the Magistrate's Court thi" morning. The fines imposed totalise £3l. The informations were laid by fl* Auckland Transport Board, for which Mr. Mackay appeared. Counsel salt the bus proprietors w ere outside til* licensing authority of the TransporBoard if more than 2s was charged for the trips. In many cases the farhad been advertised by notices or the bus windows as 2s Id, but only 2s had been charged. Where licences had been refused, the services, witfares at 2s, had been ruu in defiancof the Transport Board, which was bound to protect the licensed s«r vices. The service cost of the licence was 30s, w r ith £ 1 for each bus engaged on the service. Counsel called witnesses to prore that the advertised fare of 2s Id had not been insisted upon. It was stated on behalf of defer d-1111b that the passengers had laughed a.t the extra penny, and paid only 2s, in spite of the attempts made by the drivers to collect the advertised fare. The defendants’ buses had been charging twice as much as the licensed service, and it was a difficult proposition to run.

“They must understand that they cannot carry on a service in defiance of the Transport Board.” commented Mr. W. R. McKean. S.M. "If there are further prosecutions, I shall impose more substantial penalties."

On two charges, F. J. Williamson was fined £2 10s and £1: the Auck land Bus Company was fined £5 on each of two charges: G. E. Carter, on two charges, was fined £2 10s and £1; M. McCarthy was fineii £2 10s. on four charges the Suburban Buses, Ltd., was fined £3 10s. £l. £2 I<>S. and £1; G. M. McFarlane, on two charges, was fined £2 10s and £l. Mr. Vallance appeared for Williamson. Carter, and McCarthy. Mr Hubble appeared for Suburban Buses Ltd., and G. M. McFarlane.
