TWO MEN WHO CHEATED HOST LEFT WITH MANDOLIN Two men who obtained £2 from their kindly host by telling a plausible story and then borrowed a mandolin which, they' forgot to return, appeared at the Police Court this morning. Gordon Thomas Amundsen, who had a list, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment and Robert James Hawes was admitted to probation for 12 months on similar charges. Amundsen, alias Happy Amundsen,' a plumber, aged 30, and Hawes, a seaman, aged 22, pleaded guilty to the theft of a mandolin valued at £5 from Selwyn Morton Chatfield. at Te Kauwhata on April 15. They also admitted obtaining £2 from Chatfield on April 24 by means of a false representation. Chief-Detective Hammond said the two accused had been working at Te Kauwhata. They visited Mr. Chatfield and he knew they had been employed on the State Farm, so he lent them £2 when they stated that £SO was owing to them on a contract. They had also represented that they had a car which a man at Mokau was buying. A mandolin the accused had borrowed, was not recovered. “They say they gave it to some Islanders in the j city or that it was taken from them,” ; the chief-detective added. “Amundsen j has a list. He was convicted on a} series of theft charges in 1920 and | was placed on probation at Welling- j ton 18 months ago. Nothing is known I against Hawes.” Staff-Captain Holme3 asked for a chance for Hawes. It was the man’s i first offence, and he had work to go I to. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., admitted Hawes to probation for 12 months and ordered him to make restution of £7.1 Amundsen was sentenced to three i months’ imprisonment. On charges of i failing to maintain his wife and break- j ing the terms of his probation order, ! Amundsen was remanded to appear at i Wellington.
