EVERYBODY’S JOB

LABOUR WELCOMES AID ON UNEMPLOYMENT PARTY POSITION TENSE LONDON, Tuesday. Two noteworthy references to the unemployment problem were made in speeches delivered last evening. The Prime Minister, Mr. MacDonald, addressing his constituents at Seaham, Durham, said the problem had changed since the general election. It would not then have been fair to ask the other parties to co-operate with Labour. The Government had its policy and the Conservatives had theirs, and they could not be united. The circumstances were changing in regard to the national aspects of unemployment and the Government would now welcome any amount of co-operation. Mr. Lloyd George, Leader of the Liberal Party, speaking at Nottingham, said he would be surprised if the unemployment figures stopped before they had reached 2,000,000. Therefore it was essential for all men of goodwill to devote themselves to ending an evil which was eating the vitals of the nation. The Liberals had put forward a policy, but they renounced all right to it. Let the Labour Party take it and act upon it. These speeches gain further significance from the fact that Mr. MacDonald has assumed the chairmanship of the Cabinet Committee on Unemployment on the eve of the adjourned debate on Wednesday on the salary of the Minister in Charge of Unemployment, Mr. J. H. Thomas.
