CRICKET MATCH OFF

RAIN DRENCHES PITCH AT THE OVAL VISITORS ENTERTAINED LONDON, Tuesday. The cricket match Australia v. Surrey had to be abandoned today. The sun shone brightly at the Oval in the morning, when play should have been resumed, but the pitch was still drenched as a result of rain and a thunderstorm yesterday. - The Australians had scored 379 for five wickets when stumps were drawn on Saturday, Bradman (252) and Fairfax (28) being not out. There habeen ho play since. Mr. H. D. G. Leveson-Gower presided at a dinner given to the Australian cricket team by the Surrey County Cricket Club. He confessed that the selection of the English test team was causing a lot of worry. FANTASTIC DREAMS “Sometimes I dream Bradman is never dismissed for less than 150 runs in a test match, sometimes that Woodfull wins all five tosses, sometimes that Oldfield never misses a catch at the wicket, but they are only dreams,” said Mr. LevesonGower, speaking in his dual capacity of president of the Surrey Club and chairman of the English selectors. The ex-Lord Mayor, Sir Kynaston Studd, in proposing the toast of test cricket, said he hoped the test matches would not be played in a manner which would overshadow the real spirit of the game. The Australian captain, Woodfull, and Mr. W. L. Kelly, manager of the visiting team, responded.

The dinner was held 'in the historic Skinners Hall, which is panelled in oak. Musicians in the gallery played old-time tunes. Much valuable antique gold and silver were displayed.
