NO TAR FOR STREETS

DRAINAGE IN ROSKILL DISTRICT ROAD BOARD MEETS “At the time of writing there is not a drop of tar to be had in Auckland, either from the Gas Company or the Restar Company’s works/’ reported Mr. John Dawson last evening to the Mount Roskill Road Board, of which body he is engineer. In consequence of this shortage, the work of tar-seal-ing the board’s roads is at a standstill. As the result of a between the board’s representatives and officers of the Transport Board, it was decided to make application to the latter body for the sum of £IOO, being the estimated cost of repairing footpaths in Dominion Road, which were damaged when the tramway extension work was being carried out. Tho board’s engineer reported that the western area drainage works were proceeding satisfactorily. Mr. E. W. D. Foote was appointed chairman of the works committee, and a vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring chairman, Mr. E. A. Pearce, who declined nomination.

Tho Valuer-General advised the board that as an Assessment Court may be required to hear objections to valuations, the board should take the necessary steps to have an assessor appointed. On the motion of the chairman, Mr. E. F. Jones, the appointment of Mr. T. Mclndoe was approved. Tho board’s solicitors notified that all necessary steps had been taken for the raising of a loan of £62,000 for drainage work in the western area of th© district and the law affecting leans had been complied with.

Tho Commissioner of Transport wrote to say that he had hoped tho board would have favourably considered the recommendation of tiie Transport Department to raising the classification of Buckland and Pali Roads from third to second class, but seeing that such would entail increased maintenance costs, the department would not push the matter further.

In response to a request by the Transport Board, it was agreed to effect temporary repairs to Three Kings Road, pending the decision of the ratepayers on the question of raising a loan to 'concrete the highway.
