ENGLISH TROPHY
CHALLENGE BASIS STILL CONTROL BOARD MEETS The Control Board of the Auckland Football Association was advised at its meeting last evening by the Council of the New Zealand Football Association that it had been decided to continue to play this season’s matches for the English trophy on the challenge basis. Transfers were granted as follow: G. Stretton, Tramways Club, to Ponsonby; W. Hart, Manurewa Club, to Corinthians. Reporting on case of Tinkler, of the Tfamways Club, who was ordered off last Saturday week, the Judicial Committee stated that the referee controlling the match had acted contrary to the rules in ordering the player off for questioning his decision without first administering a caution. The committee, in the circumstances, had decided to severely reprimand the player. Air. F. Jacobs, a member of the Judicial Committee, wrote calling attention to the infringement of the penalty law in senior games at Blandford Park. He stated the infringement was that the referee allowed players to stand behind the goal-line when the kick was being taken. The rule stated that “all players, excepting the goalkeeper and kicker, shall stand outside the penalty line, inside the field of play.” It was decided to refer the subject to the Referees’ Association. CHATHAM CUP MATCHES COUNCIL APPROVES DATES Press Association WELLINGTON, Tuesday. At the council meeting of the New Zealand Football Association, Mr. B. L. Salmon presided. The competitions committee submitted the following dates for the Chatham Cup competition: June 28, Wanganui final, at Wanganui; July 19, Wanganui v. Manawatu; local finalists to be found in Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago; July 26, winners of Mana-watu-Wanganui v. Wellington; August 2, winners of last-mentioned match v. Auckland finalists, at Auckland; August 16, Canterbury v. Otago; September 6, final North v. South, at Wellington. The committee reported that considerable difficulty had been experienced in fixing suitable dates owing to the large number of counter-attrac-tions. The recommendations were adopted. An entry from Poverty Bay for the Chatham Cup was returned, as it was received too late. A challenge from Wellington to Auckland for the Football Association trophy was approved.
A letter was read from the Auckland Association saying it intended to have the preliminary games in the Chatham Cup competition played on Wednesday nights. The Tramways team, while agreeing to play, protested against night matches, desiring its protest to be forwarded to the New Zealand
Association for a decision. It was decided to reply that the committee had no objection to matches being played at night meanwhile, and that the question of dealing with the matter by rule be deferred to the next annual meeting.
