BEARING ON HACK EVENTS SNOW PRINCE IMPRESSIVE Tli ere were a number of Jervois Handicap candidates racing at Taumarunui on Saturday, and form at this gathering may have some bearing on the results; indeed, two winners figure in tho second division, viz., Snow Prince and Royal Visitor. Of the pair Snow Prince has the better credentials, for he performed soundly at the provincial fixture, beating a fairly good field over seven furlongs in the Matiere Handicap, and incurring a 71b penalty for the mile hack later in the day, in which he finished fourth, while Kaha, Elysianor, Unoco and Trishna were among others to finish behind him. Snow Prince, who is owned by the Paeroa sportsman, Mr. J. Brenan, revels in wintry conditions, while a middle distance may not bother him. Of late he has raced most consistently and is im - proving with every race. It is doubtful if he has ever been better. His First Score Royal Visitor’s success in the Maiden Handicap was well anticipated, and he displayed true grit in a hard finish. ! Two furlongs further subsequently proved a bit too far later in the day, and it may bo found that he will not be sufficiently seasoned for Tuesday’s mile. Still, one never knows. Next racing term the son of Lucullus should be a good winner for Owner-Trainer A. Cook. Te Awamutu Trainer G. Paul has a couple of fine improvers, the Austral-ian-bred Trishna and Sir Kay, who just failed to catch Rose Lupin in the first division of the Matapuna Handicap. He is a well-built type, and one who will benefit by racing. Trishna’s owner lias every reason to feel proud of his purchase, for she is a beautiful mare. The daughter of Seremond showed pace in the Owliango Handicap, and must not be left out of calculations as regards her chances at Ellerslie. It is doubtful if a heavy rainfall would soften the track inside the trestles to any serious extent. Nedda and Dumblane went six furlongs in 1.20 2-5 without being fully extended. Tardy and Stealth broke away from the seven furlong post and came'home in 1.37. Salmo Solar and Top Speed were not asked to beat each other over a mile in 1.51. Evening and Sudden Storm strode over seven furlongs in 1.37 2-5. Circulation and Camisader were in theid stride when beginning seven furlongs. which they cast behind in 1.32 4-5. the last six in 1.19. This was the j outstanding gallop of the morning. Impertinence and Fair Exchange galoped seven furlongs in 1.35 2-5 the former doing best at the finish. Pink Note came away from Money Mine when concluding a mile in 1.50 the first half in 53 3-5, and the last six m 1.23. Bitractor was too god for Meitui over six furlongs in 1.19 2-5. ~W ingatui began at the mile post, and picking up Smithereens at the seven furlongs, covered the distance in 1 49 3-5, the last seven in 1.36. Leading Boy and Crossbow ran over five furlongs in 1.72, and Caterpillar, under a nice hold, put the same ground behind in 1.7 2-5. Ravine and Royal Flower finished up six furlongs in 1.21 2-5, with the former pleasing most. A sister to Haulage beat Captain’s 2j ft ,-°^ x 7 hal , f . a nii ? e in 52 2-5 and Black Duke did a nice striding work over a couple of circuits. Antrim Boy, Red Heather, John Bradbury, Tembroney, Glenrowan and others were allotted useful tasks. PRETTY POLLY’S GRANDSON WINS IMPORTANT RACE The Grenham Plate, a good class three-year-old event decided at Newbury last month, was won by Christopher Robin, a grandson of the famous Pretty Polly. His dam, Hutch Mary, died shortly after foaling the colt, who has an engagement in the Derby, but was not mentioned in the Two Thousand result cabled to the Dominion. Christopher Robin is by Phalaris, while bis dam was by William the Third from Pretty Polly.
