OTIRA BUSY

RECORD COAL TRAFFIC A record in the volume of coal and timber carried through the Otira tunnel on any one day was established by the Railway Department last Friday, when 3,250 tons were handled. Twelve trains were required to bring the freight from Arthur’s Bass to Christchurch. The week’s figures were also expected to constitute a record. Up till Friday 13,669 tons had been hauled through, and another heavy load was expected on Saturday. The main reason for the big tonnage is that ten steamers were bar-bound at Greymouth and the freight was being diverted to the railway.
