SATISFACTORY YEAR'S WORK REPORTED AT ANNUAL MEETING

WIDE FIELD OF ACTIVITY At the annual meeting of the Auckland branch of the Naticnal Council of Women, presided over by Miss Carnachan, president, last evening. Mrs. A. D. Campbell, Mayoress, read a letter from her Excellency Lady Bledisloe, expressing thanks and deep appreciation of the welcome and reception she had been given by the women's organisations of Auckland. Mrs. Campbell also thanked the women for their support and cooperation in the organisation of the function. COXGRATULATORY MESSAGES Many glowing tributes to Miss Amy Johnson’s pluck and heroism in winning such honour for British aviation by her successful flight from England to Australia were paid by members. She had shown the world what women could do, and on behalf of the women’s organisations of Auckland, Mrs. Campbell was asked to send a congratulatory cable to Miss Johnson. It was also decide to communicate with the Dominion president, Air. Fraer. suggesting that the Xational Council cable congratulations to the young aviatrix on ' her wonderful achievement. The meeting also passed a resolution deciding to send a letter to Miss Ina Wight, congratulating her on being the first Auckland woman to obtain her pilot’s certificate, and another to Mrs. Henry Hayward, whose policy of showing only all-British moving pictures receives the hearty approbation of the Auckland branch of the council. A cordial welcome was extended to delegates from the Women’s Progress League, Airs. T. W. Silcock and Airs. Aloller, and the Western Area Residents and Ratepayers’ Association, Takapuna, Airs. Blomfiekl. The financial report and balance sheet, showing the sum in hand of «£IG 11s 3d, was I formally adopted. ANNUAL REPORT The annual report showed that 43 societies, sending 73 representatives, were now affiliated with the council, and the honorary members’ roll, known as associate members, now stood at 08. women holding prominent positions in the community. Work for the year had been very satisfactory, the achievements including the extension of appointment of red-cap porters; improvement of shelters at bus terminii; giving support in the refusal to sanction in city area one-roomed flats of type suggested; promoting petition before the House in connection with the reopening of the late Elsie Walker inquest; raising Auckland’s quota toward obstetrical scholarship; and supporting obstetrical endowment fund appeal. The council would continue to work for the appointment of women police, child welfare, and the consideration of the training of social workers. It was felt that certain committees were necessary to gather information, to meet for discussion and submit progress reports to the branch from time to time, and with this aim in view committees were appointed to deal with matters touching education, industry, government. finance. social welfare, health and publicity. During the year deputations had waited on the Transport Board with regard to delay in boarding buses at termini; the Hospital Board regarding new building site for infectious hospital; the Akarana Alaori Association regarding employment for Alaori girls; the Minister of Justice regarding women police, and the Hon. Air. Veiteh to interest members of Cabinet in the aims and objects of the National Council of Women. NOT SELF, BUT SERVICE Aliss Carnachan in her address had a special word for the new delegates, impressing upon them the importance of attending the council meetings and reporting the matters dealt with to their societies. They were the connecting links and if they did not attend the meetings the personal touch was lost and council and societies suffered alike. The president spoke of the growth of women’s national council throughout the world and said that through the International Council of Women they were linked up with 40.000,000 women. The International Council stood for the promotion of every helpful activity throughout the world and the speaker gave the members of the Auckland branch the motto “not self, but service” for the ensuing year. They should not grow weary in well-doing, and she urged them to do all they could to promote peace among the nations of the world. ELECTION OF OFFICERS In the election of officers Aliss Carnachan was re-elected president, Aliss C. J Flatt re-elected honorary secretary, Airs. E. AlcNair re-clected honorary treasurer; vice-presidents, Airs. Sam Cook, Aliss Melville, Sister Hannah, Aliss Basten, Aliss Begg, Aliss Newton; Dominion committee, Miss Carnachan. Airs. Alfred Kidd, Airs. AicXair. Aliss Alelville, Miss Jackson, Miss Begg, Aliss Basten, Aliss Flatt and Sister Hannah.
