AWAPUNi JOTTINGS

OTAKI CANDIDATES

TRY-OUTS ON THE TRACKS Special to THE SUN PALMERSTON N., Today. As a result of the withdrawal of Mrs. A. McDonald’s candidates, Awapuni will have but a small team at Ellerslie next month. Red Fuchsia has been out in the paddock since before Wanganui, while Elicit is now on the inactive list. Birkbeck, while far from his old self, is attending the tracks. Of the stable’s quartet which was to have gone to Ellerslie, Llyn Du is the only member who is beinng kept up to the collar, and the Kilbroney gelding will no doubt now fuliil his engagement in the Raukawa Cup at Otaki. On Saturday morning Llyn Du beat Potoaform (C. Broughton) at the end of six furlongs, which were run in 1.24 3-5, but the former had the advantage of the inside running, and carired a lighter poundage. Three of the quintet which Awapuni supplies for the open sprint contest at Otaki in Callanmore, Moutoa Treasury, and Keddar, were associated in a scamper over live furlongs. In the run down the straight Callanmore gained a slight advantage over Moutoa Treasury, to complete his task in 1.8 4-5, Keddar being a length and a half back. In view of the state of the going, it was a very fair effort. Later on, Dobbin beat Patearoa ovpithe same distance in 1.9 4-5, but the fifth member of the local sprinting contingent, Hunting Boy, was restricted to strong pace work on the sand

An attractive performance was recorded by the Colossus youngster in G. New’s stable on Saturday morning, when he sprinted home from the twofurlong post with Merry Melody in 25 1-5, there being practically nothing between them at the finish.

Moutoa’s Acre and Braggart, two Maiden Flat candidates at Otaki, are regular associates in their track gallops, and there*is seldom little between them. On Saturday morning, however, Moutoa’s Acre had the best of matters in the run home to cover the live furlongs in 1.10 4-5, Braggart being a length a lid a-half back after having had the inside running. Terra Firma, Trojan Melodv. and Merry Damon went out to perform a half-mile gallop, but the Raukawa Cup candidate found the youngsters too speedy for him over a short course and he was still well back at the post.’ Terra Firma, who is a great upstanding sort got up in the last few strides to head off Trojan Melody, the pair' tunning the distance in the good time wiii'L 1 ?! 8 , probability Merry Damon nt ntn hr • ll I OUS ’-J engagement ° takl . despite his 10.1, while the Flat. 1 * Pair Wlll com l :,ete in the Maiden
