. iiglit gelding has pleased the track j watchers at Addington and some little improvement on Easter form would make liim a force to be reckoned with j in the mort important events at the ! j Canterbury Park Trotting Club's win- ! ter meeting. East June Albon’s big. pacer raced particularly well on the j lidding tracks and when right can ac- : j custom himself to any* conditions. Nice Pair of Trotters ! Fields for the two-mile unhoppled ' ; trotters’ events at the Canterbury Park j Trotting Club’s winter meeting are not i going to be large, but good class is engaged. Writer, Rose Audo, Dolores, 1 Tonic, Jack Bingen, and Kyra are a few who have performed well over j various distances this season and ; Write, and Tonic are a pair that i j should win more races for trainer C. ■ . Donald. “Writer, a converted trotter, i has started 13 times already this season and has been out of a place on only five occasions. His tally is-five wins, a second and two thirds. His j best time for two miles is 4.38, and 1 he is handicapped on 4.37. Writer I is expected to reach the tight trotting i classes next season. Hard on Backmarkers The present system of handicapping 1 j greatly favours unexposed horses, and j even when they go well inside their handicap, they are handicapped on form. This makes it automatically ! J hard on the back markers, whose task becomes very much more difficult than j under the old system. Some trainers should study the illustrated Press and note how the champions look when fit j and well and going to record, says a Southern writer. One or two horses at Forbury Park looked light, lean, and lathy in condition, devoid of muscle, and showing an utter lack of the vital force that makes the successful racer. One horse, indeed, appeared to be dozing when led around the birdcage prior to a race. This sort of thing has been noticed in a race, but it is unpardonable in one backed and expected tef win. Leading Western Drivers Up to the end of April A. Shealian had drawn well clear of the other prominent reinsmen who drive continuously on Perth and Freeman tie courses. Every year a gold medal is presented to the driver of most winners during a" season. For quite a long time the most prominent men have been Shea- I han, "Walton, Clarke, and J. Simmons. With three more months to go Shea- I han was well in the. lead. Fie had ! driven 29 winners, 18 seconds, and 19 thirds. Clarke was next with 17 wins, j 13 seconds, and 13 thirds. Walton and j Simmons had each driven 14 winners, but Simmons had driven 19 minor place-getters, while Walton was cred- j ited with 11.
