Canterbury Park Winter Treble

DISCUSSED BY “ABAYDOS” CLASSY FIELDS ENGAGED While light-harness business is dull at present in Auckland owing to unsettled weather and the fact that the winter fixture is still several weeks off, things are brisk in the South. Next Saturday will mark the opening of the Canterbury Park winter function, which will be followed closely by the relief meeting at Dunedin. A week later the Ashburton Club will close the season in the other Island. When this run of activities is completed, owners, trainers and lightharness enthusiasts generally will turn their serious attention to the Auckland Club’s winter carnival, which will ring down the trotting curtain in New Zealand for the 1929-30 season. As many horses taking part at the Canterbury Park sessions on May 31 and June 3 will visit Epsom for the later fixture, the Addington proceedings will have more than a passing interest for Auckland provincial trotting fans. The card which comes up for presentation at Addington next Saturday is an interesting one and has drawn an unusually large entry. High-class competitors are well catered for, and allowing for a certain percentage of the entrants to be missing on acceptance day. the fields will still be on the large side. With so many horses showing good form at the recent fixtures. backers will find the task of solving the various problems somewhat difficult. The three chief events will be the Paparua Handicap, Stewards’ Handicap and Railway Handicap, for which Abaydos” appends an early survev of the fields as handicapped. Paparua Handicap 2 miles; 4.32 limit The front line presents a solid barrier, and includes several real speed merchants, some of whom have also stamina credentials. Kid Logan has a mile record of 2.8 2-5, and if he can go the extra distance, would make U Great Logan lias run some solid races and Vendome is at her best again. Arikitoa is a sturdy pacer, but Lingfield appears lacking in real staving ability. Wrackeen will go well and Muriel de Oro is one likelv to upset the best laid plans. Jolly Pet is good enough, but still unreliable. Avenger has reached high class in mushroom style, but will he repeat the performance, Talent and Genuine do no * R uil out the last Pinch too well ana Pageant does not seem at his best yet. Travis Axworthy may be short ® ra -ce, but The Shrew is a possiDlUty. Bespite her Bunedin failure, she should run prominent at Addington. Omaha is another which can so pretty quick when wound up. and op recent showings must be seriously eon-

side. Lingfield can go a merry ten furlongs, but will find the opposition decidedly tough. On the next mark Final McKinney. Morning Sun, Trav* Axworthy and Great Logan comprii-r a dangerous quartet. The two fin*;named are well placed later in a miK dash, but Travis Axworthy will teihl this heat to his liking. Linkman ,« threatening to win any day now. but may find Native Prince, the l>ackmarker, too good at the handicaps. Off 2.43 the Auckland pacers hold i rosy chance. Four to make an appei' at this stage are Kid Logan, Final McKinney, Travis Axworthy and Native Prince. Railway Handicap (Saddle) 1 mile; 2.16 limit The popular saddle contest bears a remarkably open appearance and the field contains some exceptionally speedy customers.
