CALIGULA’S GALLEYS
SECOND SHIP TO BE LEFT IN LAKE NEMI Signor Mussolini has decided that the second ship uncovered in Lake Nemi is not to he removed, "as it is identical in construction with the first.” The pumps have therefore ceased working, and calculations are already being made as to how soon Lake Nemi will resume its normal aspect. At a rough estimate, it seems that 15 years must pass before the little lake is filled up again to the level that is now visible above the bare, rough shore exposed through the drainage. A much longer time will be necessary before the beautiful trees whose branches once hung over the water’s edge and were mirrored in the lake will have grown again. Even the archaeologists seem to experience relief at the news of the suspension. All efforts are now to be concentrated on getting the first ship safely out of its bed of mud into the little museum on the lakeside that has been built for the purpose. The divers are to go down to the second ship to try to salvage any objects of interest that may be there, but the body of the galley will still remain under water.
