ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE
DESPONDENT YOUNG MAN JUMPS FROM WALL SIX MONTHS IN HOSPITAL Press Association WELLINGTON, Thursday. Supporting himself on crutches, a clerk, aged 22, whose name was suppressed, appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Police Court today, on a charge of attempting to commit suicide. It was stated by the police that the young man became despondent about his prospects in his employment last November, and lie jumped 30 feet from a concrete retaining wall. As a result, he had been in hospital since, and he had not yet fully recovered. He was convicted and discharged. Sub-Inspector Lopdell said the 3 T oung man’s parents lived in the country. and he had been sent to work in a city office. He suffered a nervous breakdown. On a Sunday morning he went to the terrace overlooking Boulcott Street, and after throwing his hat over the wall, he jumped himself. Hospital expenses totalling £BO had been incurred. Counsel said the accused had been earning only £lO a month in the city, and he had lived a “hand-to-mouth" existence, as his wages were only sufficient to cover living expenses. It appeared that he became despondent over his prospects, and, succumbing to a state of depression not uncommon with one of his age, attempted to take his life. His parents were anxious to take him home for a year. They would also pay his hospital expenses.
