STANLEY BAY ANGLICANS

PARISHIONERS’ MEETING The parishioners of St. Augustine’s (Anglican) Barish, Stanley Bay, were surprised last evening when a letter was tabled before the annual meeting informing the parish that Archdeacon Hawkins would not now be able to take up his appointment as vicar, as the shortage in the number of clergy in the district necessitated his services being utilised elsewhere. In the meantime, the letter stated, the Rev. W. E. Lush would conduct the regular services. Mr. Lush, who was chairman of the meeting, expressed his desire to do anything in his power to help the parish. A suggestion that Stanley Bay should revert to a previous arrangement and be a part of the Devonport parish was turned down by an almost unanimous vote. The number of vestrymen was increased from six to eight, Messrs White, Horne, Hounsell, Roberts, Cullington, Brenby, Browne and Bush ell. Mr. White will be vicar’s warden and Mr. Bushell people’s warden. The financial report disclosed that all accounts were in a satisfactory condition; the church rebuilding fund now stands at £1,700, but the meeting was definitely of opinion that the church should not be rebuilt until the parish is in a position to do so without running into debt.
