BUSINESS SCANDAL ENDS IN DIRECTORS’ CONVICTION SENSATION IN SYDNEY Reed. 9.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. In the Criminal Court John Gunn, aged 45, a solicitor, and Allan Howden, aged 40, a sharebroker, were convicted of conspiracy in connection with the Property Insurance Company, Limited, and were remanded for sentence.
Detectives entered the office af the Property Insurance Company. Sydney, on December 31 and arrested John Gunn, managing director, and William J. Beckett, a director, who were later charged with conspiring, between January 1 and December 12, 1929, to defraud the public. Over £150,000 was involved in the charges, which were the culmination of weeks of quiet investigation by the police into the formation and operation of the company. The concern began business in 1927 with a capital of £200,000. The investigation was done so quietly that the members of the staff were dumbfounded when tlieir labours were suddenly interrupted by the entry of the detectives and the police, who took away the books and papers which were considered necessary for prosecution purposes. . Gunn was for many years in a legal practice in Sydney. Beckett is connected with Beckett's newspaper. Howden was also before the court in connection with the same charge.
