WHALE FISHERIES
VALUABLE FIELDS IN FAR SOUTH, EXPLORER SAYS RESULT OF MAWSON’S TRIP SYDNEY, Wednesday. The report of Sir Douglas Mawson on the Australian and New Zealand Antarctic research expedition says it can be definitely asserted that off the coast of Enderby Land there exists a very valuable whale fishery. “It would appear,” says the report, “that the Norwegian exploring vessel Norvegia located this whaling ground simultaneously with ourselves, and from that fishery millions of pounds’ worth of products will be recovered in the next few' years.” The report adds that exhaustive hydrological data have been secured. About 1,000 deep-sea soundings were recorded, while biological studies were continued throughout the cruise on an extensive scale. The report also deals with experiences in the pack ice. after which Sir Douglas states that he charted a new area, which he designated Macßobertson Land, together w-ith lands farther west, known as Kemp Land and Enderby Land, the whole of which has been claimed for the Crown.
