BOROUGH MANAGER
QUESTION DEFERRED BY ONE TREE HILL BUS RESTRICTION DEPRECATED The proposal to appoint a general manager for the borough received considerable attention at the first meeting of the One Tree Hill Borough Council last evening. The Mayor, Mr. J. S. Hardwicke, presided. Cr. R. G. Clark pointed out the value of an authoritative medium between the council and its staff. This would obviate any delay in the execution of urgent works, as the work would not require to wait until a council meeting in order to go forward. Mr. Clark proposed that the town clerk, Mr. A. Leese, be appointed to the position. He mentioned that as general manager of the Borough of Taumarunui Mr. Leese had proved a successful administrator. In opposing the proposal, Cr. F. J. Goldstine claimed that the time had not yet arrived when a borough manager could be' given an opportunity of proving the advantage of such a position of authority. As the council had only recently been elected, it should proceed in the ordinary way as a borough administrative body until the councillors had an opportunity of gauging the value of the appointment of a borough manager. The question of such an appointment was deferred for six months. A complaint was made by Mr. Clark that the Auckland City Council and other neighbouring local bodies were neglecting their obligations to maintain their section of footpaths in the One Tree Hill district. Cr. W. G. Mulhollar.d, in support of the complaint, gave several instances of lack of attention to footpaths by neighbouring municipalities and emphasised the work done by the One Tree Hill body in that respect. It was resolved to request the City Council and the Mount Roskill Road Board to resume work on their share of the borough’s footpaths. A deputation led by Mr. G. Mackenzie was presented in support of a petition of protest against the decision of the Transport Board that the vehicles of the Suburban Bus Company should not pick up or set down passengers between Green’s Corner and the City. A motion was carried that Crs. Goldstine and Mulholland attend the Transport Board in protest of their restriction. The 'Legal and Finance Committee was elected as follows: —Crs. F. J. Goldstine, R. G. Clark. C. L. Slyfield. Works and Reserves Committee: —Crs. W. I. Hancock, W. G. Mulholland, K. W. Aimer. Waterworks Committee: Crs. R. G. Clark, W. G. Mulholland, K. W. Aimer. Cr. F. J. Goldstine was elected deputy-Mayor and Mr. A. Leese town clerk. The Mayor’s honorarium was fixed at £IOO.
